We use EmailOctopus to manage and distribute our newsletters. EmailOctopus processes subscriber information on our behalf.

Journalism and story submissions

If you contact us with a potential story, we may retain and use the information you provide to assess, research and produce journalism.

Journalistic material may include personal information and information relating to matters such as political opinions, beliefs, health, sex or sexual orientation.

Data-protection law contains provisions and exemptions relating to journalism in the public interest. Where applicable, these may affect how certain data-protection rights apply.

Submitting information does not guarantee that we will investigate or publish a story. Unless we expressly agree otherwise, contacting us does not automatically create a confidential source relationship.

Subject to your cookie choices, we use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use our website.

We may disclose information where required by law, to protect someone’s safety, to defend legal rights or in connection with a sale or restructuring of the business.

We do not sell our subscriber list.

International transfers

Some providers may process information outside the United Kingdom. Where this happens, we take reasonable steps to ensure that appropriate legal safeguards are in place.

How long we retain information

We retain information only for as long as reasonably necessary.

As a general guide:

• Newsletter records are retained until you unsubscribe. Limited suppression information may then be kept to ensure we do not contact you again.
• Subscription and accounting records may be retained for up to six years after the relevant financial year.
• General correspondence is normally retained for one year.
• Complaints and legal correspondence may be retained for five years.
• Journalistic research and source material may be retained for as long as it remains necessary for journalistic, archival or legal purposes.

Please do not send highly sensitive documents to our general email address.
